Has gen z rejected small government?
By A-CH ·
With your reminder that other people exist outside of here you might see that other people want a more authoritative goverment. Now you as a libertarian might look at that and ask how did we get here well I belive its due to a multiple amount of factors such as the 2020 lock down, USAID, and libertarian party simply unable to get with the time.
When covid hit america people were forced to get locked in there houses. Gross display of authority and its even more disgusting that people don't talk about the effects that came from this. One of the major effects of the lockdown was political inaccuracy. We all know that the US government banned anyone spreading "misinformation" about covid 19 this created so many echo chambers this and the large influx of people brought to the internet through the lockdown created the perfect storm for left to recruit brand new normies. Now there really is no point with engaging with the modern left they are to entagled with there echochambers. They just chose which ideology sounded the best due to there poor understanding of incentives, but where were the libertarians to purify these poor souls. They were too divided and unable to recruit new people.
Back in the 2010's libertarianism was extremely popular so popular that the craze seeped into real life politics with Ron paul in the election of 2012. The libertarian party was great because they had a certain set of principles. Principles that were missing in the other parties. For example trump strongly condemned the iraq war saying it was unacceptable in 2016 but got the US into an overseas war in 2026. With the libertarian party you didnt have to worry about flipping the script so casually. Back then it was clear that libertarians won the free market of ideas. But then with the aforementioned iraq war, the Republicans were looked at as the bad guys in mainstream politics. Of course they wanted to rebrand themselves so they had alliance with the libertarian party due similar positions (this alliance is somewhat still in place) leading to many Republicans "becoming" libertarians. Mainstream republicans like Ben shapiro said that they were a libertarian and without purity testing due the tent being to huge he was allowed to say that. Now we are at 2020 Dolnald trump lost the election due to the new "libertarians" failing the economy they quickly rebranded themselves into regular old republicans. And now the libertarian party is trying appeal to these same millennials with old talking points. When they should be appealing to the zoomers. Other dissident right ideologies were able to spread to others using short form content that were allowed because of the aforementioned effect of the left to silence what was being said with people adapting to spread there message. But the libertarians didn't do that they were too focused on there success back in the 2010's and did not adapt to the changing times. Now libertarians are looked at as diet republicans with arbitary differences when it should be the opposite.
But why is it so hard for community outreach. The other parties had advantages for being apart of the winning president. For example you know those extremely expensive subscriptions to newsletters. You always wonder who is stupid enough to buy those things well the us goverment is that stupid, at least it appears to be because the government bought subscriptions to those newsletters using USAID. Of course the goverment didnt do that out of the kindness of there heart as they subscribed to more authoritatian newsletters like politico to basically write about how good the democrat party was doing and ignore the bad things. This was only figured out with DOGE cutting USAID costs. The republican party and the democrat party both benefit after eachother so they make sure a 3rd party never gets the president's seats so they don't have to justify argueing there policies instead say the other party is bad.
We didn't need a libertarian movement back then because liberal democracy was such a huge leap forward for freedom that argueing for more freedom was not as favored. But with gen z entering in politics this is not the case. Gen z will argue for more authoritative policies and less freedoms due to advantages the past political parties have given themselves. More echo chambers being created due to political disenfranchisement and the modern libertarian movement failing to make itself look cool which is apparently how you get more ideological followers. Really the bottom line to this article is that politics should have remained an activity for the few as we can see with large influx of people engaged with politics to this day
